Oral SUBLATTICE IDENTIFICATION BY NON-CONTACT AFM ON THE (001) SURFACE OF A ROCKSALT-TYPE CRYSTAL

چکیده
Dynamic force microscopy has proven able to achieve true atomic resolution on the surface of different materials in UHV, insulators in particular [1]. Owing to imperfect knowledge about the structure and composition at the apex of the imaging tip, it is, however, difficult to assign observed features to specific atomic sites. On ionic crystals, a common approach is to compare experimental images with simulations relying on plausible models of the tip apex and fitted interionic potentials. Thus, on the CaF2(111) surface, F ions at inequivalent sites could be distinguished [2]. On the (001) cleavage plane of crystals with the rocksalt structure, however, one kind of ion is imaged as a maximum, and the other kind as a minimum. Owing to the high symmetry, it was deemed impossible to determine which sublattice is imaged because the sign of the electrostatic potential near the tip apex is not known a priori.

AFM study of hydrophilicity on acetaminophen crystals.
Pharmaceutical powder processing is notoriously subject to unpredictable jamming, sticking and charging disturbances. To unveil the material science underlying these effects, we use atomic force microscopy (AFM) on a common pharmaceutical, acetaminophen (APAP). Specifically, we study surface adhesion and morphology as a function of relative humidity (RH) for monoclinic acetaminophen, using both...
متن کاملDetection of Polymer Brushes developed via Single Crystal Growth
Single crystals consisting various surface morphologies and epitaxial structures were applied to investigate the effect of other phase regions in the vicinity of a given tethered chains-covered area having a certain molecular weight of amorphous brushes. The designed experiments demonstrated that regardless of the type of surface morphology (patterned and especial mixed-brushes, homo and co...

In this research, a response surface methodology (RSM) was used to investigate the effects of independent parameters (pH, contact time, temperature, adsorbent dosage, and initial concentration of pollutant), their simultaneous interactions, and quadratic effects on crystal violet adsorption onto two starch based materials in the form of batch experiments. The characterizing results indicated th...
متن کاملAnalytical Approach to the Local Contact Potential Difference on (001) Ionic Surfaces: Implications for Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy
An analytical model of the electrostatic force between the tip of a non-contact Atomic Force Microscope (nc-AFM) and the (001) surface of an ionic crystal is reported. The model is able to account for the atomic contrast of the local contact potential difference (CPD) observed while nc-AFM-based Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy (KPFM) experiments. With the goal in mind to put in evidence this shor...
متن کاملNon-contact Friction Force Microscopy Exploiting Lateral Resonance Enhancement
A method for sensing the dissipation occurring when a sharp atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip is oscillated laterally above a surface at distances typical of non-contact mode AFM operation is established and demonstrated. Dissipation is detected by measuring the damping of lateral resonant modes of the AFM cantilever, excited independently after the lateral resonant mode identification, when th...
